Every year, we get new versions of Apple operating systems. We already saw the release of iOS 17, Apple's newest mobile operating system, which released with the iPhone 15 series and is now rolling out to older phones as well. But Apple's computers are about to get the same treatment. macOS Sonoma, the latest version of macOS, is now officially rolling out to everyone.

macOS Sonoma comes with version number 14.0, as well as a bunch of additions that actually make your MacBook more iPhone-like than ever. We have, for one, things such as homescreen widgets, which coincides with the return of widgets to absolutely everywhere. Windows 11 has them on a separate widget panel, but for macOS Sonoma, Apple wants to let you put them on your desktop as normal — you could already put widgets on the notification center. In addition, you also have new screensavers as well as a redesigned login screen that looks an awful lot like the lock screen on your iPhone.

You also get improvements to screen sharing, the ability to put web apps on your Dock, and a new game mode that will optimize your Mac for games to actually run well. You should definitely check out our full roundup. Compared to previous macOS updates, this one might look a little smaller in terms of actual improvements. But it looks like a growing trend for Apple to make macOS closer and closer to iOS with every release. That shouldn't result in a loss of functionality or anything of the like, and it's mostly just an aesthetic thing, but it's definitely the direction Apple is going for. Most of the time, however, those changes are actually pretty good, like how Apple redesigned the System Preferences into an iOS-like Settings app.
