Can You Turn Your Reddit Account Private?

Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Steam let you make your account private, which means only your followers can see the content you post. On Reddit, a similar feature doesn’t exist, unfortunately. Your profile is always visible to the people who want to access it.

However, that doesn’t mean you have no options to hide certain information on your profile. Reddit does offer a few options to help you control your privacy on the platform. For example, you can prevent your posts from appearing in r/all and your profile in /users. There are a few other tips as well that you can use to make your profile a bit more private.

How to Control Your Profile and Content Visibility on Reddit

One way to make your account “private” on Reddit is to turn off two options for your account. These options let you control your profile and your posts’ visibility on the platform.

Those options are:

• Content Visibility: When you turn off this option, Reddit stops displaying your posts in r/all and your profile in /users.
• Show Active Communities: When you disable this option, Reddit doesn’t show the communities you’re active in on your profile page.

To turn off these options in your Reddit account, follow the instructions for your specific device below:

On Desktop

If you’re on a Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook computer, use the Reddit desktop site to make changes to your account.

To do that, launch a web browser on your computer and open Reddit.com. Sign in to your account if you haven’t already done so.

After signing in, in Reddit’s top-right corner, click your profile icon and choose "Profile." When your profile page opens, on the right side, click the gear icon.

You’ll arrive on the "User Settings" page, in the "Profile" tab. Here, turn off both "Content Visibility" and "Active in Communities Visibility" options.

Reddit automatically saves your changes, so you don’t have to do anything.

And that’s it.

On iPhone and Android

If you use Reddit on an iPhone or Android phone, use the Reddit mobile app to change your account settings.

To start, launch the Reddit app on your smartphone. In the app’s top-right corner, tap your profile icon and choose "My Profile."

On the following page, beneath your profile picture, tap "Edit."

On the "Edit Profile" page, toggle off both "Content Visibility" and "Show Active Communities" options. When you’ve disabled these options, in the top-right corner, tap "Save" to save your changes.

And that’s all.

Other Tips to Be Anonymous on Reddit

While Reddit doesn’t have a feature to turn your account private like other platforms, you can make a few tweaks to your account’s privacy settings to tighten up the control of your account.

Here are a few tips you can use to remain private on this platform.

Use Anonymous Browsing

If you don’t already know, Reddit’s iPhone and Android app offers an anonymous browsing feature. When turned on, this feature lets you browse Reddit’s content without that browsing being linked to your Reddit account.

To use this feature, open Reddit on your phone, tap your profile icon in the top-right corner, select the down-arrow icon next to your username, and choose "Anonymous Browsing."

If you’re on a desktop computer, use your web browser’s incognito or private window to surf Reddit anonymously.

Prevent Search Engines From Indexing Your Profile

By default, search engines like Google and Bing can show your Reddit profile in search results. If you want to prevent this from happening, you can turn off an option in your account settings. Once you’ve done that, these search engines will be discouraged from indexing your profile.

To make that change using your desktop, access Reddit’s Privacy settings page and turn off the "Show Up in Search Results" option.

If you’re a mobile user, launch Reddit, tap your profile icon, choose Settings > Account Settings for [Your Username], and toggle off the "Show Up in Search Results" option.

You’re done.

Block Users in Your Account

If you don’t want specific people to be able to access your Reddit profile, you can block those people in your account. When you block someone, Reddit prevents that blocked user from viewing your profile or your posts. For that user, you basically don’t exist on this platform. Note that Reddit doesn’t notify the user that you’ve blocked them.

To block someone using Reddit’s mobile app, access the user’s profile page, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, and choose "Block Account."

On a desktop, access the user’s profile, select "More Options" in the right sidebar, and choose "Block User."

The blocked user can’t see your profile or your posts. Enjoy.
